I Would Go
by Jo Lady

On a beam of light
or through vacuum black
I would go
to earth's great past to
watch her children grow

I would go to hear
first human laughter
flitter through conifers
and to see the first
human tear
shed for another
slide down a cheek

I would go to look
into starlove eyes
under ancient heavens
and listen to hope
newly born
scurry through grasses
toward brightberry days

Even if trapped in
the emerald past
to watch our naked
innocent birthtime
I would go
