Angels In The Snow
In the gentle light of morning
I see a wondrous sight
A beauty, pure and simple
Left here by the night.
A sky so blue and endless
Lit warmly by the sun
Looks down upon a world so white
Saying, "winter has begun".
I bundle up in heavy clothes
Before the world's awake
To step upon the virgin snow
Knowing what I will make.
Then lying down upon the ground
Like the child of long ago,
Outstretch my arms as if to fly
And make angels in the snow.

'Tis the Season
The leaves are yellow, gold and red, falling to the ground
A cold wind sharply blows and scatters them around
Soon the snow will fall, and mom and dad will smile
Bustling though the stores, buying all the while
Yes, it's Christmas season, that exciting time of year
Where children jump for joy without a trace of fear
What will Santa bring them? They can't wait to see
Christmas morning finds them happy as can be
But during this season, let's all pause
To think of something besides Santa Claus
Remember that man on the street, whose life set him apart
And give him a smile that will warm his heavy heart.
The children, who lost their mom and dad
Dream of a life they could have had
Old folks sit in chairs, thinking of days gone by
The only sound they seem to make, is a heavy sigh
'Tis the season to be jolly, full of love and caring
It's true, a warm heart will make us feel like sharing
I hope you have no sorrow, hardships, or strife
And to all I wish a joyful season, and a loving life

Snowfall
falling gently
touching my face
knit by angels
frozen lace
perfect motifs
drifting down
create mother earth's
winter gown

By the Window
She sat in the silent darkness,
Her sweet face withered and old.
Wrapped in her homemade blanket,
Her only relief from the cold.
She watched the white snowflakes falling,
They seemed to fill up the sky.
Each one held a frozen memory
Of happier days long gone by.
In this one she saw a dear little boy,
Dipping gloved hands in the snow,
Laughing while building his snowman.
Now where did that little boy go?
And where is the man who stood with him?
The handsome one, faithful and brave,
Who had vowed that he never would leave her
Then gone and layed down in his grave.
The visions of earlier winters,
Full of love and of hope filled her still,
But the warmth that they brought had no power
To ward off the increasing chill.
And this was the way that they found her,
A smile frozen still on her face.
Though no one would know, in the midst of the snow,
She'd found peace in a brief winter's grace.

Winter
Silver icy spiders' webs
Twinkling in the frosty air
Whilst the grass curls deep
Beneath the rigid frozen soil.
Witches branches on leafless trees
Are motionless in the deep cold
And I sense the silent hibernation
In warm burrows long closed to man.
Maybe a fox, late seeking his dinner
May chance upon a lost pheasant
Who looking for his lifelong mate
Sees her frozen on the ground.
Icicles give fluid to my friendly Robin
But he still preens his redbreast at me
Whilst hoping for some bacon rind
Or frozen crusts the squirrel has left.
Taking pity I creep outside in the icy cold
To warm the birdbath and soak new bread
He chirrups at me as if to say "Hello"
And my freezing breath goes before me.
Hands cold now, I see the tiniest tip
Of a green leaf poking through the frost
And then another and a little yellow tip
Sure sign of spring I say back at my cosy fire.

Winter
Bleakness and beauty
stretching endlessly
like low-hanging
pewter skies
Cold alien sun
filtering faintly
through a shroud
of crystaline clouds
Gray heaviness
finally evaporating
exposing the glare
of reborn sun on snow
Sudden dusk
descending too soon
while spirit still seeks
celestial warmth
Blue-black skies
extending to infinity
yet making the heavens
seem so near
Moon sparkle
on crackling snow
as keen and clear
as Arctic air
Huddling inside
'round artificial hearth
while the whole universe
beckons us forth
The sacred feel
of testing mettle
as we both embrace
and hide from winter.

Snowfall
Big, white and fluffy
the snowflakes abound;
majestically and gently
they float to the ground.
A little child frolics and
catches the snowflakes on his tongue,
while enlightened lovers walk
arm in arm feeling young.
Silently, yet consistently,
the snowflakes persist.
Personally, I find a stroll
during a snowfall hard to resist.
Yet, there are the people
who only grunt and grumble
as they watch the snowflakes
relentlessly tumble.
They tend to fret
and worry as to how
they will manage the removal of snow
without a snowplow.
If the snowfall
occurs during the night,
the surrounding countryside awakens
under a warm blanket of white.

Winter
The hot summer air dissipates like a train slowly
running out of steam.
Flashes of cold spike through the shortening days
as a warning of things to come.
Yet in this warning there is a welcome peace.
For somehow in the fluffy white blanket that is
winter there is a softening of evil, as if the
blood of inhumanity slows and the intricate flakes
that fall hold the secret of unattainable
righteousness,
frozen, yet still living....waiting to be scooped up
by childish hands and made into something wonderful.

Winter's Donation
There was my friend,
shivering in the snow.
his torment and solicitations
had made my wallet anorexic,
I had long since emptied
my moth balled pockets,
Frosted was my heart for charity.
Yet I followed him;
to a granite mausoleum
where I stretched my resources
on the icy table, true blue
charity I could afford.
he, as surgical nurse
slapped the wedge
onto my hand, gently
I broke.!
my icy sternum with,
care! the speader,
parted my ribcage, I
reached in and razored
arteries and veins.
He lifted out with respect
the ripe meloned heart.
set it on a mantle
where he studies
the pumping action;
the ventricles and auricles
waiting for them to speak.
such inspiration:
pleases me!
